The Pastor's Heart

Friday, September 3, 2010

I'm sure you've heard the term, "the voice of experience."  That's a voice that needs to be heard and to which you ought to pay attention.  Just a few days ago, I heard the voice of experience.  You may have been there and heard it, too.  It came from the heart of a 96 year-old preacher, Dr. E. C. Sheehan, speaking during the Sunday school hour last week on our church anniversary.  He spoke from Matthew 11:28-30, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."  I know we are all probably familiar with that passage, but to hear it from a man who has lived it that long showed me its truth in a new, fresh, and powerful way.  Jesus says, "Come," and it's more than just a request, it's a command.  A command given to the one who labors, who is fatigued and worn down.  To the one who is "heavy laden," who is overburdened and loaded up.  And as the one who is worn down and loaded up obeys, the Savior promises rest, a word that literally means "refreshed."  Refreshed.  All of us could use that!  If you're one of those who is fatigued and overwhelmed with burdens, listen to that voice of experience.  Better yet, listen to the voice of his Savior, Who invites you to "Come...and I will give you rest."

See you Sunday!
